Huang Yi & KUKA

“One to watch”

In his quest to be the perfect child, Taiwanese choreographer and dancer Huang Yi yearned to have robot as a friend and companion. As an adult, he created a robot to be his dance partner; that robot is KUKA. Huang’s ingenious piece overcomes the usual safety constraints to enable him to dance side by side with his robot. His boyhood in which he constantly projected the façade that all was well now is now the central inspiration for his choreography. Huang Yi & KUKA is an intriguing and touching work about loneliness and self-actualization, expressed in a perfectly calibrated pas de deux between robot and dancer.
